The perfect team-mates for the Brighton Treasure Hunt 2021

The perfect team-mates for the Brighton Treasure Hunt 2021

Posted on: 23/11/2020

Picking the right team-mates will be crucial to how successful you are in next year`s 2021 Brighton Treasure Hunt. With the pride of your office/company or the honour of your family/friends at stake...not to mention the chance of winning some nice prizes then it is definitely worth taking your time to decide who is going to be in the team. There is much more to it than picking names from a hat!
Like all the best sports teams it certainly doesn`t pay to select all the best ones of a certain type. For example if you loaded up a cricket team with all the best batsmen you may score a lot of runs, but never turn draws into victories as you haven`t got enough bowlers to get all the wickets. It`s more a case of deciding what is required for the task ahead and then combining those who have done well in the past with those in form at the time. This is where you will need some help from Black Cat, because at this early stage you do not know what is required nor what combination of people will be the best fit.
As with a sports fixture, being at home can make a difference to the confidence of the local players. The Brighton Treasure Hunt 2021 will be in...Brighton! Familiarity with the route outlined in the hunt will allow your team to give more of their attention to the task of tracking down the answers to the clues and completing the challenges. Ideally, I would have at least one person who knows Brighton well in the team, even just to bolster everyone`s confidence. This person may even be wise as to where to locate certain things on route...like an owl sculpture maybe?!(you never know when that can come in handy)
If you are choosing family and friends to help you rather than work colleagues then there`s a good chance the whole team will know Brighton very well between you, as opposed to a work team which may include those who commute to Brighton from other places. If you are reading this as a potential works team from outside of Brighton though, then fear ye not!
There is a prize for the best non Brighton based team and if your company enters three or more teams then Black Cat will also be organising an intra-company competition for you to enter automatically at no extra cost. To be honest as well, the routes within the different `zones` of Brighton will be quite easy to follow and the skills required are less to do with navigation (no need to tell the locals that though!), and more centred around other factors such as keeping a sharp eye on visual clues and demonstrating creativity and having fun in the challenges.
Sounded like a couple of big hints a second ago as to who else to pick? Yes, you have a total of six in the team, one of whom we have decided is a local expert. The second team mate should be a multi tasker. Someone who can read out the clues, in fact reading more than one clue ahead to make sure you haven`t missed anything, whilst looking out for the answers themselves. As far as I know it is common knowledge that women are more adept than men at multi tasking?! Team-mate  number two should be a woman if you agree! This person will control the pace of your treasure hunt. You can in theory take as long as you want, but it may pay to set yourselves a time limit to add to the fun and pressure you to find the answers quicker.
Team-mate number three is an interesting one. He/she should be skilled at `reading between the lines` and interpreting Black Cat`s occasionally quirky/cryptic clues! The questions will not be of the type such as what colour is the 4th door on your left, but more if 4 and 8 are blue and 3 and 7 are green, what is 6? When everyone else is looking a bit bemused and saying let`s move on then you should check with team-mate number three first before you do as they are likely to be the one to crack the code and point you in the right direction. It`s even possible that your office has completed a Black Cat treasure hunt in the past? Ideal..get someone who has done one before with a feel for the style of questions  on your team.
I mentioned creativity in the challenges and that means you must involve someone who loves a creative challenge in your team. There will only be six mini challenges on route, but they will score big points and if fully completed will be critical to your team`s overall success and enjoyment of the hunt. The challenge`s points allocation will depend on certain criteria that Black Cat will detail for you. These could be originality (compared to other teams),humour (is your team`s content in the challenge funny?),using all the team- the challenge could be to re-create a short historical scene or amusing scenario. How creative will you be to get everyone in the photos/video clip.Using `props` may be a factor. This does not mean buying something, but maybe using something to hand, like the pebbles from the beach or arranging clothes in a certain way. Good interpretation of the challenge will be critical too. At the end you will need to email your photos and video clips to Black Cat. How easy will it be for Black Cat to work out what you intended?! This person should have a `vision` of what is needed and how to use everyone to achieve it.
The fifth person can be a bit of a `wild card`.It may be that they are quite extroverted and will have the personality to enlist help from strangers. At the moment Black Cat is waiting for Covid19 regs to ease before including those type of challenges or suggesting it as a strategy. However, that`s not to say that this person can`t encourage applause and help from afar. This person may have very specialist knowledge that you know about that could be called upon at a critical stage.
The only other person on the team is you! You will be needed to draw the rest of the team together and organise them. Maybe you have a keen eye for detail. For example some of the questions will entail photos taken from an odd angle or close up for which the answer will be what is this on route or where can you see this on route.
