Team Building Treasure Hunts or Hen Party Treasure Hunts? A Mystery No Longer!
Posted on: 03/10/2024By Tim Carter (Owner of Black Cat Treasure Hunts)Last week`s ratings of treasure hunts did not include The Brighton Heist Escape Treasure Hunt Challenge, the Cluedo treasure hunt or the Murder/Mystery treasure hunt. Why not, I hear you cry?! The main reason was that, although on the face of it they could be grouped together in a similar theme, once I thought about it more it became clear they are quite distinct types of treasure hunt. This blog digs deeper into what you can expect from each and, more importantly, which ones might be more appropriate for a hen party or team building event...or something else entirely!
Here in reverse order, as they say on all good(?) TV shows, are my findings:
Murder/Mystery Treasure Hunt
It is safe to say that Black Cat probably expends most time and effort in getting this style of treasure hunt spot on. I use information about the participants, who become the suspects, and then devise a completely original story around them. At the same time, a route and questions in Brighton within which to explore becomes no easy task.
The aim is to work out the murderer, put together a plausible and creative backstory whilst also seeing the answers to questions and completing themed challenges in order to win. To date I think the most telling statistic is that all the bookings so far of the Murder/Mystery treasure hunt have been for either hen parties/stag do`s or, of course, `Sten` or `Hag` groups. Maybe a pre-event alcoholic brunch allied to an elevated level of competition heightens team`s creativity and attempts to win. Individuals who subsequently find out that I have nominated them as the murderer always seem pretty happy to be chosen!
This could in theory be used as a team building treasure hunt, but the typically larger numbers for such an event make this treasure hunt better suited to a hen party, as mentioned above. A birthday treasure hunt for an original birthday present is certainly an area where you could bring this option into play however!
Cluedo Treasure HuntThe Cluedo treasure hunt incorporates all the characters/rooms and weapons from the classic game. A selection of participants could be used instead of Mrs White/Colonel Mustard and Professor Plum etc but that would be your choice.
In complete contrast to the Murder/Mystery treasure hunt, all of the bookings for the Cluedo treasure hunt so far have been for team building treasure hunts. This is possibly because it attracts the attention of an older age group who are more aware of this game or, more likely, because there is much more scope to personalise the murder mystery treasure hunt for hen/stag party groups than this one.
The Cluedo treasure hunt can be played indoors or outside and involves working out clues to find out where images of the suspects/implements/rooms have been hidden and, therefore, crossed off your list. Outdoor venues have to be carefully selected and is another reason why this has been predominantly a team building treasure hunt.
So...it`s one all with one to play!
The Brighton Heist Escape Treasure Hunt ChallengeOne of the attractions of this treasure hunt is that it can be completed in an hour. (Cluedo: 1.5hrs and Murder/Mystery 2hrs). It is fast and furious, uses every opportunity to keep to the theme and has a rating out of 100 for your team`s attempted bank heist escape!
Brighton has so far been the place to hold this as two different, albeit similar, routes are used to accommodate two teams at the same time. There is tension, there is competition and ultimately only one winning team.
There has been a mixture of team building and hen party bookings for the `Heist Escape` and I believe with the right group would be an excellent choice for a birthday treasure hunt too.
Black Cat always attends these himself to ensure it runs correctly and has fine-tuned it to perfection! If I had to choose, I would probably just edge towards a team building event for this treasure hunt, but it certainly has its attractions for a hen party looking for a speedy way to explore Brighton too.
The choice is yours of course and I look forward to you getting in touch on either:
