Does Black Cat Treasure Hunts Do Treasure Hunts Outside Sussex? The Truth Is Revealed!

By Tim Carter (Owner of Black Cat Treasure Hunts)

Each year I get a specific type of email asking, "Can you write me one of your personalised treasure hunts? (Yes, of course, I think. These are my favourite treasure hunts) .... I live in Inverness." (Well, I think, I`m sure your hen party treasure hunt in Brighton will be a lot of fun when you get down here.) She continued, "What sort of cost will it be to write one in Scotland?".
Now, I have actually been to Inverness before, but only when I was young. I do remember it being a wonderful place to visit though and most likely a suitable place for an entertaining treasure hunt. The only thing is, I like my treasure hunts to be excellent value and comparable in price to other activities. Travelling and accommodation costs plus, importantly, the additional time associated with the trip meant I had to decline. I do not intend Black Cat Treasure Hunts to become a franchise as that takes away from the creativity and individuality required that go into making memorable treasure hunts.
That`s a `No` then? I hear you ask to the title of this blog. Not so fast! This year I have had enquiries for Shoreditch, a village in Norfolk, Worcester, Dorking and Beckenham, none of which are in Sussex. The only one of these that looks like it will not go ahead is the one in Beckenham. High numbers for the one in Norfolk helped bring the per head cost down, a sharing of cost brought a couple of the others down to acceptable levels whilst I eventually realised that Dorking is closer to where I live than some of the places I have written treasure hunts in Sussex before. Beckenham? Well...sometimes my amazing marketing skills fail me!
I do like a road trip and I`m looking forward to all of these later in the year. Significantly I would like to add that I have always completed treasure hunts outside Sussex, just not as many as there will be this year. Maybe Black Cat Treasure Hunts landing up on the first page of Google for UK treasure hunts and treasure hunts UK had something to do with that, but contemplating Google`s algorithms usually gives me a headache so I won't worry about that for now.
So where else have I been over the years outside Sussex? My London treasure hunts are better known and include Shoreditch (one of the big reasons I will be happy to go back there this year), Westminster, Hyde Park and Camden. The majority of these were team building treasure hunts, but my first Westminster treasure hunt (I have done several there) was for the guests of a big, hotel chain.
To the West, I can only really say Hampshire with a special event treasure hunt (a garden show) set on the grounds of a stately home and also just outside Basingstoke, inside and on the grounds of a rather posh hotel. I behaved well and set up a really fun treasure hunt for an extended family celebrating a special anniversary occasion.
During a driving treasure hunt for a birthday, I did actually go through Appledore, which is in fact in Kent. The route started near Rye, Sussex. but I believe this shows I really am prepared to go the extra mile to write top treasure hunts! Talking about Kent though, I did write a birthday treasure hunt that was wholly within that county by setting up one In Tunbridge Wells. Very nice place, but I had no time for the spa unfortunately.
With Dorking on the horizon, I am pleased to say I have already been in Surrey several times before. Firstly, a corporate treasure hunt in Reigate. On the way there I was a little unsure as to how hard it was going to be to find a good selection of questions. I should not have worried...there were all sorts of interesting things there (see Reigate sculpture in photo). On checking the other treasure hunts in Surrey, one was for a childrens party in Haslemere. I am that `original gift` option! The other was for another garden show event near Guildford.
It appears, then, that I write 1 to 2 treasure hunts outside Sussex each year. This is why having 4 more booked in by the end of February this year is notable. I am still hoping to return one day to the V&A museum in London. A few years ago, I wrote an anniversary treasure hunt and a birthday treasure hunt (with a Dragon ball theme!) within the museum. The biggest test for this venue is deciding what not to include.
So, 2023 is going to see some adventures away from the South of England for the first time. If you think you have an occasion or event to tempt me away from sunny Sussex then contact me (Tim) on info@blackcattreasurehunts.co.uk or call (01323) 655346 to start a booking.
